ASWC Program Coordinator Wanted
The Alaska State Writing Consortium is hiring a new Program Coordinator starting July 1, 2009. Major duties include preparation of the NWP budget, working closely with the board and the UAF Principal Investigator (Dr. Eric Madsen, Dean, UAF School of Education), coordinating ASWC activities including facilities, materials, and credit courses, overseeing the Summer Invitational Institute, contract preparation for Teacher Contributors, and arranging for travel for board meetings. The successful candidate must be an Alaska resident with a bachelor's degree, excellent grant writing and communication skills, a current knowledge of writing theory and practice, and current technology skills.

Welcome to ASWC's Home on the Web
The Alaska State Writing Consortium began as a group of enthusiastic teachers and administrators who prompted their school districts to embark upon a cooperative effort to improve the teaching of writing in schools throughout Alaska.
Out of those beginnings grew the Alaska State Writing Consortium, a dynamic, ongoing effort providing Alaskan educators with an essential resource for professional development, teacher leadership, and classroom research, focused upon the teaching of writing and increasing student achievement. ASWC Mission
Today the mission of ASWC remains the same: to provide professional development for teachers to improve student writing.
ASWC Goals
Our goals have been and continue to be the following:
- To promote the writing workshop approach to teaching writing.
- To help teachers prepare their students for the Alaska High School Qualifying Exam and the Standards-Based Assessments.
- To provide teacher training for Writing Across the Curriculum.
- To integrate the Writing Process and the Six Traits of Writing K-12 in all subject areas.
- To assist teachers in understanding and applying the Alaska Grade Level Expectations (GLE’s).
- To offer training in developing writing workshops at both the primary and secondary levels.
